Charles and Jolene are the faces of Terra Perma Design. Two Chemical Engineers who turned their brains and passions towards the soil, sustainable living, ecosuburbia and Permaculture. We did it! Started a family, paid off a house, quit our day jobs, taught PDC's from home. Ahhhhh the goodlife.
And.......then....... we moved to Pemberton to help manage Charles's families farms and are working harder than ever all over again. Though there are certainly worse places to be looking after family.
So this is our new project, Forest on Conte. Put down new roots, rebuild a homestead, learn a farm, create an ecosystem and hopefully an enterprise on its surplus. We would like to demonstrate a forestry and livestock based forever farm and share that journey.
As for the name Forest on Conte.
Forest - We live on John Forrest's farm, he has stewarded the land and its creatures for 18 years, and needs a hand to get things done now. And Pemberton is a forest centered bio-region so any regenerative farming here must adhere to that backbone.
Conte - This was "Vic Conte's Farm", he was a legend supplying the town with fruit and veg and running to Northcliffe and back (60kms) into his 90's. So legendary, they built a road around the farm and called it Conte Rd.
So Forest on Conte seems a logical fit, big changes are coming and needed, but lets honour the past.
We are by no means experts, often just a few steps ahead on the learning journey. Being engineers we love to research, test, consolidate and share information so "education" is surplus yield.
Terra Perma is back to offering farm design services but as before with Permaculture, rather than us master planning your farms and gardens, we teach you how analyse your unique context and evolve with it. Charles loves a farm field day walk and talk consult, and so we are here if you need to get started from scratch, a sounding board for ideas or a helping hand to the install or maintain a system. Mainly we look forward to having another agricultural regenerative practice change makers in our community.
Charles Otway is a passionate ecological farm and homestead designer. Growing up in Pemberton on small farm Permaculture rootstock, he has seen, applied and eaten through much of the theory and techniques Permaculture has to offer. With 10 years in Perth heading PermacultureWest he is a qualified Permaculture trainer, an experienced sustainability and food garden advisor, designer and public speaker. More recently he has moved into farm design and Regenerative Agriculture consultation and returned to the family farms in Pemberton.
